Mounda bay and Katelios have officially become part of the NATURA 2000 network. The European Commission decision of 19 July 2006 has published the list of sites of Community importance (SCIs) for the Mediterranean biogeographical region. Now Mounda bay and its Caretta caretta population are protected by all the relevant articles of the Habitats Directive, not only by a part of Article 6 as it was until the candidate list became official.
This is only the latest step in a long story of legal protection of the area. The European Union fully recognizes the importance of Mounda bay as a Loggerhead sea turtle nesting site, just like all the other nesting sites of this endangered species around the Mediterranean sea. The Katelios Group will make sure that these basic laws are always respected, and that the conservation of biodiversity, in other words of life, can live on.
