The Katelios Group has established a fishermen compensation scheme. We offer all fishermen on the island a small material reward (nets, fishing lines etc.) if they bring injured turtles to the group. We mean to prevent losses of turtles due to fishing. It happens that a turtle can be caught in a net.
With the collaboration of the authorities this scheme is now effective, every year we get reports of accidents with turtles, and we manage to save many of them. We increase also fishermen's awareness and responsibility.
When they call us we go and rescue turtles, and we bring them to the vet in Argostoli. If turtles are found with severe injuries we have an agreement with Olympic Airways for them to be flown to the Turtle Rescue Centre in Athens run by Archelon.
