Brief history
On the road between Skala and Argostoli, interrupting the long series of hotels and restaurants, you can find the Environmental Centre of Katelios. The building used to be the local school. It was closed and abandoned for many decades, until the Katelios Group was granted permission to use it. With donations and a lot of effort, it was renewed and opened to the public in 1999.
Content
The Environmental Centre hosts information not only about Loggerhead sea turtles, but about all the wildlife of the area and of the island. It has displays about the marine life in Katelios bay, fishing techniques and traditions. Also about local herbs and vegetation, birds and terrestrial reptiles, geology (see picture above). It is maintained and staffed by members and volunteers, and supported by their and tourists' donations. Many local schools (see picture right) and thousands of international tourists visit the Centre every year. It is an invaluable reference point for environmental education in Southern Kefalonia, and the place to go if you want information about sea turtles in Kefalonia.
Opening times
The Environmental Centre is open every day in the summer, from 9:30-13:30 in the morning and from 17:30-21:00 in the afternoon.
Location
The Environmental Centre is on the main road Skala-Argostoli, in Katelios. If you come from Argostoli you will find it on your left, at the end of the long hotel strip just out of Katelios centre. If you come from Skala you will see it on your right, staying on the main road just after the turn into (Kato) Katelios. It has an unmistakable sign on the front and our logo on the external sidewall.
